What to do in Phuket with Kids

Posted on 17:00 by Unknown
This blog post has been rolling around my head for a while. But it's hard to know where to start. I think Phuket is a great place for kids to live, a great place for kids to visit on holiday and a great place for families to experience together. Yes, together. I admit there may be a couple of times when a Mum and Dad might want to leave their kids at the hotel "kids club" and maybe got for a massage together or leave the kids with a babysitter and go for a "just the 2 of us" dinner, but mostly I would say this : Whatever you do, do it as a family. Let the kids experience a variety of places, smells, sights and sounds. In a way, almost all of this blog is about Phuket with kids, because I am a Dad and we are a family! Our kids were born here in Thailand, go to school here, speak Thai and English .. so I realise my situation is different to a visiting family, but the blog sticks to things that tourists can do and does not really dwell on the expat life. The main thing our kids do is school, plus they do extra activities like music and Taekwondo and football. There's a lot for kids to do if you live here ...

Kids football 2

(above) That's my boy playing football and playing guitar

Kids Taekwondo

(above) And my daughter practicing Taekwondo

There's a lot of "kids stuff" here and I am of course happy to let kids be kids, but also involve them in family activities. We often go out for the day at the weekend, or out in the evening to eat and I like them to get new experiences .. I also like to get new experiences myself, but almost always with my family, with the kids. Now, some things depend on the age of the kids, there are things to do in Phuket like parasailing or diving or bungy jumping and these are not for 2 year olds! Kids age 10 or older can try diving - my daughter has tried and I plan to take her for a proper dive trip soon. People often ask me "is this suitable for kids?" - I can tell you with our kids we did boat trips when they were a year old, drove all around Phuket and in the (more than) 6 years since this blog started they've come with us almost everywhere and they are happy to explore back roads, temples, islands ... We (I hope) manage to mix kids stuff with adult stuff. As every parent hopes .. we're doing our best!

Best Things for Kids in Phuket

I am not a fan of lists, but for this blog page, a kind of list is needed. This is not everything, suggestions welcome - please leave a comment. This might take a while and I will probably update the page as time goes by .... I asked my kids what they like doing, and they both went for Taekwondo and they both went for "The Beach Bar" ...

Sunset dinner for the kids at The Beach Bar

The Beach Bar is one of our favourite hangouts, we have been going there for years, our kids play with the owners kids, we can eat decent food at a good price, enjoy a sunset beer, it's safe, friendly, quiet. Yes, best thing to do with the kids .. go to the beach (and eat new food!). Kids also mentioned that they like Layan Beach and eating dinner at Dairy Hut and Route 68, a couple of restaurants in Phuket Town. I hope kids visiting Thailand try some Thai food - all part of the experience!

My son gave me "Khao Sok" as one of his favourite places - me too! Khao Sok National Park is not in Phuket, it's a few hours drive, past Khao Lak and into the jungle! We like to stay here to relax and get some jungly fresh air. We have also done boat trips on the lake, tubing and kayaking there. Oh yeh!

My boy and his kayak

Closer to Phuket, a great day out that we have done many times, with kids when they were as young as 2 years old, is a boat ride in Phang Nga Bay including James Bond Island and Koh Panyee.

Through the cave

My kids both (independently) wrote that they like to visit the Indy Market, which is on Thursday and Friday evenings in Phuket Town. I urge people always to try Phuket Town sometimes - and if you visit the old town early evening when the Indy Market is on, that's a good time. Better for older kids, not toddlers.

A great weekend we had last year (and will do again) ... we stayed on Racha Yai island, kids went snorkeling, enjoyed beach time, met huge monitor lizards, played in a pool with a great view. Add in the boat ride, the tractor-pulled shuttle from pier to hotel - kids got something new and interesting and had fun, and so did their parents!

Kids Jumping at Racha Yai Island

(above) My daughter and friends enjoying Racha Yai island :)

Next ... Phuket Aquarium. We have been here countless times over the years since our daughter was a baby. Fish! Wow! Fish! Amazing! Colours! Fantastic! And as they get older, Dad the diver can educate them about species and the environment and we all have a good time. And the entry fee is cheap too. They learn something new every time we visit. And it's close to the aforementioned Beach Bar :)

Kids in the tunnel at Phuket Aquarium

And then nerdy Dad takes over. I like my kids to have fun. And learn. Hopefully, sometimes, both at the same time. So, kids let's go to a museum. Phuket has a number of museums and a few of them are very good. The kids have enjoyed several visits to the Mining Museum. Phuket used to have a big tin mining industry back in the 19th century through to the mid 20th century. We've also enjoyed family visits to the Thai Hua museum in Phuket Town, which is mostly about Phuket history and housed in an old school.

Thai Hua Museum Entrance

Let's Rock!

(above) The kidz at the Thai Hua Museum and Phuket Mining Museum

Enough nerdy stuff, let's have some fun (balance, balance). I think I'll have to take the kids to the Splash Jungle Waterpark again sometime soon. They've been twice, it's not that cheap, but boy did they have fun. Can't put a price on a happy face. There's more watery fun at the Phuket Wake Park - both kids have been enjoying wakeboarding and water skiing recently!.

Splash Jungle Waterpark Phuket

Phuket Wake Park

Or how about some mini golf? We've been to the Dino Park mini golf near Kata Beach and the newer Adventure minigolf at Bang Tao Beach. Fun for everyone!

Hole in One?

And I am sure the kids will enjoy Phuket Fantasea or the newer Siam Niramit show. Our kids have seen Fantasea a couple of times and I'd like to go again. Part of the "magic" in these shows is (as an adult) watching your kids watching the show. Watch their magical faces. You might know how the trick is done, but for them it's magic.

Me and the boy at Phuket Fantasea

Like I said, we do like to go exploring sometimes and the kids come and explore with us. A trip we have done a couple of times, and will do again, involves taking a ferry to the small island of Koh Yao Noi, hiring scooters and riding round the island to see what we can see. Kids have loved these days out. New experiences are good for young minds.

Kids exploring the east coast of Koh Yao Noi island

(above) Our kids and friends exploring at Koh Yao Noi

Our kids also love festivals and street fairs - I guess Songkran would be their favourite, and Loy Krathong, and events like the recent Old Phuket Festival. My daughter and I enjoyed walking together and visiting the shrine during last years Por Tor Festival. For a visiting tourist kid, experiencing festivals like these would be great!

Por Tor Festival 2012 in Phuket

(above) Buying a turtle cake as an offering for the Por Tor Festival

Take That Sister!

(above) Having fun on Songkran

This page could go on forever, kids don't have to do "kids things" all the time, a balance of fun, learning, new experiences, time with the family, time to run off without Mum and Dad. Our kids are happy to visit a temple, try new restaurants, and we've been a couple of times to watch Phuket FC, the local football team - last time my son was one of the team mascots :)

Phuket and Chanthaburi Teams Enter the Field

Prayers at Khao Rang Temple

(above) Our son as team mascot, and the kids at Khao Rang temple

Phuket has so much to do and see, some of it is "for kids", but (and you don't need to listen to me) I think if you go on holiday as a family, you should explore and experience things as a family. Most kids enjoy doing things with their parents, so if you want to check out a Chinese shrine, visit a museum or walk around Old Phuket Town, take the kids. And by all means have a day by the pool too! I guess what I am saying ... having kids should not limit what you do too much unless the kids are really small. I guess I should add - be aware that it's hot here, so make sure kids drink plenty of water and get their rest. Have fun with the family!

A final photo ... Phuket is great for kids because ....

Top 10 Romantic Hotels in Phuket

Posted on 04:00 by Unknown
This page is for all you loving couples out there. Phuket can be great for a family holiday, a diving holiday, a luxury getaway or a party holiday ... There's lots to do, lots to see, you know that already. Phuket also has some very nice resorts, most of them with private villas, that are great for couples, great for a honeymoon or a romantic holiday. The list below is based on the top 10 from TripAdvisor, so it may not be perfect, but it's a good start! Feel the love in Phuket ...

Top 10 Phuket Romantic Hotels

1. The Shore at Katathani (Kata Noi Beach)

The Shore at Katathani

The Katathani Resort has been open for many years. The Shore is the newer luxury pool villa wing, which opened in 2010 on quiet Kata Noi beach. And it looks wonderful! Pool villas, many have sea view but the view does vary, all villas with private pools of course. Very popular with couples. Check the reviews below - most are from couples.

• The Shore at Katathani - Info and Booking @ Agoda.com
• The Shore Reviews

2. Paresa (Kamala Beach)

Paresa

Not really at Kamala beach - like many of the luxury villa developments in Phuket, Paresa is seaview, but not beachfront - amazing views from the headland between Kamala and Patong. Nightlife within easy reach, but if you were staying at Paresa for a romantic holiday, I can't see why you'd go to Patong for more than 10 minutes! Paresa has less than 50 villas, many with pools, great place for a honeymoon stay.

• Paresa - Info and Booking @ Agoda.com
• Paresa Reviews

3. Pavillions Phuket (Bang Tao Beach)

Pavillions Phuket

Close to Bang Tao beach, but again, not on the beach, Pavillions is on the hillside, great views, and lots of privacy. Villas have pools and some have their own private spa too. It's a 'no kids' resort, very popular with couples and honeymooners. Has several restaurants, and do note that it's a good idea to have transport when you stay at a more remote, quiet hotel. Bang Tao is quite a drive from any of the main beach centers or Phuket Town.

• Pavillions - Info and Booking @ Agoda.com
• Pavillions Reviews

4. Centara Villas (Karon Beach)

Centara Villas

Located right at the north end of Karon Beach, with about 70 villas on the hillside, with beach access down lots of steps! Nice to be close to Karon to have lots of eating options nearby and Patong is not far away too, but then one can retire to a pool villa over the ocean, and there are a couple of larger pools too. And it's quite a bit cheaper than some of the others on this page!

• Centara Villas - Info and Booking on Agoda.com
• Centara Villas Reviews

5. Cape Sienna Hotel and Villas (Kamala Beach)

Cape Sienna

Just off Kamala beach, Cape Sienna has a mix of studio rooms and big pool villas, jacuzzi villas and some 'penthouse suites' too. I'd go for one of the villas, again, great seaviews, got to be a good place for a sunset overlooking the Andaman sea, just the two of you.

• Cape Sienna - Info and Booking @ Agoda.com
• Cape Sienna Reviews

6. Villa Zolitude (Chalong)

Villa Zolitude

Villa Zolitude is "up in the hills" between Phuket Town and Chalong Bay. Not near any beaches - about 10km to Kata or Karon. Villa Zolitude is reached by driving up the road towards the top of Radar Hill (highest road in Phuket). Certainly quiet up there. Good idea to have some transport if you stay at this hotel. Don't book a remote romantic villa and then complain about it being too far from the nightlife!

• Villa Zolitude - Info and Booking @ Agoda.com
• Villa Zolitude Reviews

7. Sawasdee Village (Kata Beach)

Sawasdee Village

Seems to never lose it's popularity - very much an older Phuket hotel, Sawasdee Village opened in 1991, but seems they keep renovating and adding and it keeps getting good reviews. The simpler garden rooms are quite inexpensive, the pool villas more "pool villa" price. Big plus, you are close to Kata beach and close to many restaurants unlike all the more remote hillside villa resorts. But at Sawasdee village, no sea views.

• Sawasdee Village - Info and Booking @ Agoda.com
• Sawasdee Village Reviews

8. Mom Tri's Villa Royale (Kata Noi Beach)

Mom Tri's Villa Royale

Mom Tri Devakul was one of Phuket's tourism originators. His Boathouse hotel opened many years ago on Kata Beach. Villa Royale was built later on the rocky headland overlooking Kata Noi beach. A stairway from the hotel takes you down to the beach. Great views from the rooms and from the restaurant too. It's got a certain touch of class, only 35 rooms and is often fully booked well in advance.

• Villa Royale - Info and Booking @ Agoda.com
• Villa Royale Reviews

9. Ayara Hilltops (Surin Beach)

Ayara Hilltops

Ayara Hilltops - yes it's on a hillside with views over Surin Beach (between Kamala and Bang Tao). It's a 'no kids' resort, and has about 50 suites, some with their own private pool. As with most of the romantic resorts, it's a quiet location, but Surin has restaurants and some nightlife. It's quite a hike to some of the rooms on the hill, but there is a free buggy service which I reckon you will be using!

• Ayara Hilltops - Info and Booking on Agoda.com
• Ayara Hilltops Reviews

10. Anantara Phuket Villas (Mai Khao Beach)

Anantara

Mai Khao Beach is actually Phuket's longest beach, about 10km from north to south starting from the airport and reaching up to the top of the island, and within that 10km there are only about 10 resorts. Beach is uncrowded and a resort like Anantara with it's private pool villas looks like just the place I'd like to have a romantic getaway .. or with the family, as this one allows kids :)

• Anantara - Info and Booking @ Agoda.com
• Anantara Reviews

I am sure everyone has a favourite - if you stayed at a great romantic hotel, do leave a comment. For Phuket hotel bookings, I recommend using Agoda.com first - it's what I use. Any questions about hotels or Phuket in general, please do leave a comment on this page or the Phuket Facebook Page.

Phuket Webcam at Patong Beach

Posted on 05:00 by Unknown
This Phuket Blog has been online since 2006. In the same year I started my Phuket Weather Blog, which was born when I realised that a lot of people search online for weather information. People are obsessed by the weather. Is it raining? What will the weather be like in mid-September? If it rains, does it rain all day or just showers? When is the best weather in Phuket? Well, the weather blog aims to show what the weather was really doing rather than relying on averages and seasonal generalisations. It gets updated about once a week with weather news, photos and some Phuket gossip. But the best way to check what the weather is doing right now? A live Phuket webcam! And below is a live webcam at Patong Beach ...

Patong Beach Phuket Webcam

(Note : It is a live webcam, but the date and time are sometimes screwed up!)

Patong Beach Hotel Information

On the Phuket blog you can find some hotel suggestions :

• Recommended Patong Beach Hotels.

For more extensive Phuket hotel information and online booking is Agoda.com :

• Patong Beach Hotels on Agoda
• Phuket Hotels on Agoda

Patong is of course the biggest, baddest, busiest beach in Phuket, although it's hard to tell that from the 15th floor. Mostly, and this is great for the weather buffs, you can see the sky and the sea. Yeh, Patong is not my favourite place (I only go if it's absolutely unavoidable), but everyone's different and lots of people love Patong!

The Patong Beach Phuket webcam is run by Sawadee Cam and looks out to the West over Patong Bay from the 15th floor of Patong Tower right in the middle of Patong. I realise that it's not online all the time. The apartment that houses the webcam is available for short term vacation rental. For information see www.PatongTower.dk.

There's another good Phuket webcam at Karon Beach - see here : Phuket Karon Beach Webcam. If you want regular Phuket weather updates and more, please do follow me on Twitter!

The Siam Niramit Show

Posted on 08:27 by Unknown
The Siam Niramit Phuket cultural show opened in December 2011, located just outside Phuket Town, and not too far from our house. I must have driven past it 200 times and thought "we should try it one day". but we generally tend to avoid the most obvious tourist attractions and find our own favourite things to do and places to visit in Phuket, so Siam Niramit went un-visited until now! I figured the show would be similar to Phuket Fantasea which opened about 15 years ago ... we finally visited in 2011! Siam Niramit I knew was a successful show in Bangkok and the company decided to open in Phuket too, obviously creating direct competition for Fantasea. I can anticipate people asking me "which one should I see?" - I think my answer is "both"! Phuket has a lot to do in the day time, but good quality evening entertainment is hard to find. Personally I can skip the ladyboy shows, but Fantasea and now Siam Niramit - this is top class entertainment and certainly worth doing. Well, it took only 2 years for us to visit Siam Niramit. And I think we'll go again as it's just a 10 minute drive from our house and our kids loved it (so did my wife and I, but you know amazing things are even more amazing for kids!).

And next time we will go earlier to have more time to look around the grounds. We got there at about 6:30pm, but the place opens at 5:30pm. As it turned out, at least another half hour would have been useful. We were still looking around the 'Thai Village' when staff came to find us and shepherd us off for dinner. Now we know the place, we can see more next time ... Next time! When we arrived, we could pose with some of the show's characters outside ...

At Siam Niramit Phuket

Just inside the entrance is a selection of souvenir shops - first thing to see when you arrive, and last thing you see when you're heading home. Well, sure we bought a bunch of stuff for the kids :) Little souvenir items started at just 30 Baht, but there's also an antique shop with some very nice items that might catch someone's eye.

Shop at Siam Niramit

Past the shops is a wide open area featuring a giant Naga (a mythical serpent) in a pond. The way to the main stage is to the right and the 'Thai Village' is on the left. And there were elephants! Of course I bought some bananas for 30 Baht a bunch for the kids to feed the cute little ellies who (I think) would be part of the show later.

My boy and elephant at Siam Niramit

(above) My boy and the elephant :)

At the entrance to the Thai Village are some sideshow stalls of the "olde style" which is very popular at local fairs in Thailand - things like "throw a ball at the cans and win a teddy if you knock them all over" or "throw a ball to try and knock the ladyboy in the water". My boy tried both .. needs to improve his aim!

The Thai Village is bigger than I thought, so we do have to go again! There are demonstrations of handicraft making, preparation of local snacks, typical old style houses, and more. The kids took a ride on a boat (20 Baht each), and fed a buffalo which would also be part of the show later. And then we had to dash off for the buffet dinner. Maybe next time we can skip dinner, tasty though it was, and have more time to enjoy things outside - we had to miss the Muay Thai demonstration, and my son wanted to see that (but he was hungry too, and hunger won!). Yeh, so what I am saying is, you need to come twice :)

Feeding Buffalo at Siam Niramit

(above) Feeding a buffalo

Boat ride at Siam Niramit

(above) A little boat ride for the kids

Muay Thai at Siam Niramit

(above) Posing with the Muay Thai fighter, but we did not see them fight, we had to dash off for the buffet dinner. Only just got a table, the restaurant was already all but full. We were in the VIP restaurant, as we'd been invited for a "press" evening along with local newsies like the team from The Phuket News and I saw a Thai couple I know who both work in the media. Speeches were being given as we found a seat and I was happy to find some cold beer available :) The food was good, some really tasty fish dishes, in fact way too many different options to try them all! My daughter tried Khao Soi for the first time, I stuffed myself with chicken and cashew nuts. There were curries and mussels and salads and fruits and all kind of things. At this point, I should say - get there as early as you can, see the Thai Village and then spend as much time as you can at the buffet. The buffet is optional, so if you skip that you have more time to enjoy entertainment outdoors. I read that while people eat there is also dancing and a "war elephant" display outside. I dunno, we were eating :)

And then time for the SHOW! It's a walk of a couple of hundred meters to the theater. You cannot take cameras inside. Cameras can be deposited and you get a receipt before you enter. The pictures below are provided by Siam Niramit Phuket. The show has many scenes taking you through some of the history of Siam (the country was only called Thailand after 1939) starting with the ancient kingdoms of the north, then the south (Phuket!) where you see Chinese traders coming to trade with and marry the locals. There's a Khmer scene and then the old capital Ayutthaya. The scenes are impressive, with a huge stage and many performers / dancers and some animals too. Scene changes are cleverly done, performers are not only on stage, but appear around the theater, even overhead.

(above) The South .. my area! A Chinese Junk arrives to trade with the local people.

(above) Ayutthaya. Lots of fighting!

(above) Hell (Buddhist version) ... there's a temple in Phang Nga Town called Wat Tham Tapan which has some rather scary images of hell. Certainly not where you want to end up. So be good for goodness sake.

(above) Heaven - only nice things. Can I have a few beers in heaven?

(above) The mythical land of Himapan, a place where strange creatures dwell. It's in Buddhism and Hinduism.

As you might be able to see .. the stage show is pretty spectacular at times, my son was sitting next to me and was continually pointing and saying "Dad, look at that!" and "I can see the wires" ;) At one point during the show, I think a big set change was needed, so there was a little musical comedy involving a group of players with bamboo rattles that all played different notes. An audience member was chosen to join them .. my daughter :) She enjoyed that ... was a bit stage shocked afterwards "I've never been on a stage with so many people watching before!" and people were commenting when we left the theater "that's the girl who was on stage!". My girl :) But I don't have any photos as cameras are not allowed :(

Another view of Siam Niramit .. the team from The Phuket News made a little video on the same night ...

We had a great evening! The show was great, the kids loved everything, I can certainly recommend it. The Siam Niramit show is open every evening except Tuesday. More information on the Siam Niramit Website. Booking can be made through the website or you can book through my friends at Easy Day Thailand. Many thanks to Siam Niramit for inviting us!

Aleenta Resort

Posted on 07:41 by Unknown
There are tourists who like to be in the middle of the action, like to be within easy walking distance of shops, bars, restaurants, tailors and tour agents .. and for you there is Patong and other main beach areas. Other visitors to Phuket are looking for a bit of seclusion and maybe a hint of luxury too, and Phuket has plenty of quiet beaches with very nice resorts in a different world to the crowds of Patong. The Aleenta Resort advertises itself as bein in Phuket, but actually it's just off Phuket over the bridge and turn left. It's in Phang Nga province, far less developed that Phuket, and an area that we have explored a lot in recent years (check out blog posts about Phang Nga Bay, Bang Riang Temple and Tha Sai Seafood for example).

Aleenta is certainly a "getaway". I recommend you have transport if you stay here, hire a car to get around and explore. Or just spend a few days relaxing at the resort. Most of the rooms are private villas, ranging from one to four bedroom villas. The four bedroom place is HUGE, with 1,000 square meters of space! Some villas are beachfront and some are just behind the beachfront ones. Want a quieter place to stay? Here it is ... but don't moan that it's too far from the shops or nightlife!

Aleenta Resort Beach Aleenta Resort - Room

(above) Beach at the Aleenta and view from a room

There are several restaurants and bars on site. Maybe you can wander up the beach and find a local place, but otherwise it's a bit of a drive to find other dining options. I can recommend Thanoon Seafood right by the bridge on the Phang Nga side. There's a spa at the hotel and yoga, and they do weddings too. Yeh, I would stay here if I was about 10 times richer :)

Mandarava Resort (Karon Beach)

Posted on 16:54 by Unknown
Another new hotel in the Karon beach area, Mandarava opened earlier this year (2013) on the hillside towards the north end of the beach, near the well known Pacific Club resort. Seems like a lot of newer hotels in Phuket are being built away from the beach. I guess there is no beachfront left or, if there is, the land is just too expensive. Mandarava has quickly become popular, looks very nice and the owners seen to understand the power of TripAdvisor reviews (too much power if you ask me!). We've had several customers in the dive shop this week staying at Mandarava, and so I've heard a few things about the resort. It's in the hills, so not by the beach. Probably about 10 minute walk to the beach. Lots of hills to climb to get to the resort, or to your room, as the rooms are on different levels. For sure they have a shuttle bus and hotel car, but will it always be there exactly when you need it?! It's all very green, jungly ("lush" would be a word you could use, but not a word I like) and there are several pools and little waterfalls built into the resort. I can imagine it's very relaxing.

Mandarava Resort Pool Mandarava Resort - Panoramic Deluxe Room

(above) Mandarava is in the hills, so you get some great views from the pool and from some of the rooms

There are 130 rooms, built into villas with split levels - the upper floor rooms mostly have some kind of seaview ("it's over there between the land and the sky"), while ground floor rooms either face a pool or the green jungle. The hotel has it's restaurants and bars of course, or you can walk to the main street at the north end of Karon in about 10 minutes. The location up the hill and just *slightly* out of the main strip would appeal to some, not to others. When I look at the reviews (see link below) it's the location that brings the overall score down. I'd say if you are unable to walk up hills, find a place to stay by the beach! Otherwise, the hillside is nice, you get views and can catch any breeze that's blowing.

Centara Grand Beach Resort (Karon Beach)

Posted on 07:45 by Unknown
I find it hard to keep up with new hotels in Phuket! Every year there are new resorts, or renovated resorts with new owners. In the first few years of this Phuket blog, I wrote lots of hotel pages, with suggested hotels all over the island. More recently I have added pages with Top 10 lists - best hotels, best romantic or family hotels etc. But it's been a long time since a hotel "review" - about time for a new one. Now, the hotels that are recommended here are normally recommended due to reputation, or "what I've heard" as a resident, or comments from customers at the dive shop, or top marks when I look at reviews on Agoda. I don't work for a big online travel company or anything like that, don't get free hotel stays .. last hotels I stayed in with the family were in Khao Lak and Hua Hin on our holidays. Here in Phuket, we have a house, so why stay in a hotel?!

The Centara Grand Beach Resort is right at the north end of Karon Beach. It opened a couple of years ago and does get great reviews, and to me it looks like a great place for a family holiday hotel. It's quite a big hotel, run by the Centara group who also have the Centara Karon, Centara Villas, Centara Kata and Centara West Sands resorts in Phuket! The facilities look to be very good including a kind of water park (well, a slide and a 'lazy river' at least)

Centara Grand Centara Grand Beach Resort

(above) It's all about water ... pools and the beach nearby too.

Centara Grand is right by the sea, so you have beach access, but actually you have to walk about 1km to the main center of Karon with lots of restaurants, bars and a few shops. Or take a taxi which will be 200 Baht each way. Karon beach is much much quieter than Patong to the north. I'd imagine the Centara Grand as ideal for families or couples who might book some tours for the day, and then have an evening with dinner, a few drinks and enjoy the resort for a couple of hours. For sure Phuket has a lot to do, but it's nice to have a resort to come back to after a day out and relax in the pool or have a massage!
